I’m the master of my fate, I’m the captain of my soul

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I’m not a big sport fan. Actually thinking about it, I’m no fan at all. My circle of interest is limited to family, faith, technology and very little time left for other distractions.

One of my guilty pleasures is watching movies during long flights. Mostly for its soporific agent. Very rarely can my body stay alert until the very end word.

Invictus is one of those movies. A movie transcending actors into players, script into documentary.

Invictus Movie

Clint Eastwood directed the movie – maybe I should have started with this. Gran Torino is undoubtedly among best movies of the decade.

Short pitch: Morgan Freeman plays is Nelson Mandela. The story focuses on the end of apartheid in South Africa and how rugby helped in reunifying the country together. Mandela had the perception sport could bring blacks and whites into one homogenized group of supporters. He was right; sport is not about race, religion, skin color but about performance.

Captain of South Africa’s rugby team played by Matt Damon comes from a family of white pro-apartheid activists that slowly understood the need to change. The movie gives a short glimpse of what was the process of re-unification after the apartheid. Clint Eastwood left the violence aside to focus on 1995 victory of South Africa during World Rugby Cup.

France had its Mandela moment after they won 1998 World Football Cup. I remember that night on Champs-Elysées when people were kissing, hugging and cheering all together. La France Black-Blanc-Beur literally Black, White and Arab was born.

My first visit to Johannesburg was in 1982 as a kid, it was a disturbing experience. I was horrified. Years later I came back in 1990 and things seemed even worse. Hopefully my last trip there in 2001 was a much different experience although poverty and discrimination are still dominant.

Movie has been out for a while. A must-see.

“I’m the master of my fate, I’m the captain of my soul” says Mandela. Food for thoughts.

Labotec Closes An Important Round of Funding

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Or the story of a side project turning into a big adventure.

At the beginning 2 friends with a lot of ideas, Pierre-Olivier Carles and myself, decided to launch a mobile application incubator. Few weeks later we are working on a website, legal paperasserie, blog, recruiting…and since then it has been an amazing experience. We are not really the young and reckless entrepreneurs but this project brought all the good vibes from day 1. 8 months later I am particularly proud to welcome Xavier Niel and Jeremie Berrebi on board of Labotec Inc.

Jeremie Berrebi is also a long time friend with a hyper-creativity syndrome :) We always wanted to work together and lately we were discussing of some crazy project that will maybe see the light one day.

Xavier Niel [for our fellow non-french readers who haven't got a clue who he is please check here] is a role model for entrepreneurs and his investment in Labotec means a lot to me. We will live up to his expectations. That’s a promise.

Before you get the boring press release, here is the moral of Labotec: business opportunities are not a miracle, they are the fruit of collaborative work and mutual respect.

We also want to fund your project and this is just a click away – click here to become the next Inspirer.

————————-

Miami, FL (March 15, 2010) Labotec announced today that it has secured a round of funding from major strategic partner Kima Ventures, founded by Jeremie Berrebi (Zlio, Net2One) and Xavier Niel (Free,Iliad). Europe-based fund Kima Ventures joins Kipost and FS Ventures as an investor in Labotec. The company plans to use the funds to accelerate growth in all areas of its business and to support its plans for massive scale in 2010.

Labotec is pioneering a new form of mobile applications publishing based on crowd-sourced ideas. Since its recent inception, Labotec has received hundreds of new project ideas from 27 countries. 3 applications have already launched (iSOS for Android, iMove2Music for iPhone, FakeSMS for iPhone) and 20 are slated for release by the end of the year. Labotec engages with innovators that have always dreamed to see their ideas commercialized and be given the right tools to succeed in the marketplace.

“Mobile applications are becoming a must-have for subscribers and carriers, Labotec has the potential to turn an idea into a great business” said Jeremie Berrebi, partner in Kima Ventures.

“Our goal is to produce a user-oriented portfolio of applications on mobile devices such as iPhone/iPad/iPod, Android or BlackBerry” explains Florian Seroussi, Labotec co-founder.

“Kima Ventures and its founders bring another layer of opportunities we couldn’t approach until now” says Pierre-Olivier Carles, CEO of Kipost.

According to research analyst Research2guidance, the surge in applications will be driven by a fast-growing number of smartphone users, estimated to increase from about 100 million in 2009 to nearly 1 billion by 2013. Yearly application revenues will rise from US$1.94 billion (2009) to US$15.65 billion in only four years, according to most recent research findings.

5 clichés I can’t stand listening to

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

We all have ours. Being French-Israeli residing in the US expose me to all sorts of comments I cannot stand anymore. Here are 5 annoying one:

-       Oh you live in Miami? Spring break all year long isn’t it?

  • NO – people don’t party all year long in Miami, we WORK in South Florida. In fact there is a vivid economy for startups nicely represented during our tweetups, Mobile Mondays or Bar Camp.Day 4/365
  • -       So you’re French – how is Carla?

  • How the heck would I know?? You don’t need an explanation for this one. Use your imagination J
  • -       Isn’t it too hard in Israel with bombs falling everywhere?

  • Ok, that’s a legitimate question if you think of Israel as a war zone. Actually bombs are not falling anywhere. It’s one of the most FUN country to live in. Israelis work hard and party even harder. You need to visit and you will see what they don’t show you on TV.
  • -       You fly so much, are you not afraid one day your plane might crash?

  • Duh. NO. Really – would you ask this question to a bus driver? Roads kill more every year. Statistics speak for themselves. Traveling by air is safe.
  • -       Hmm you fly business, you must be rich or stupid!

  • This one stays on the tip of the tongue every time I meet someone in an airplane. So let me put it this way – not that I need to justify myself- I fly around a million miles per year, buy most of my tickets in a cheap fare class and use frequent flyer upgrades to have a decent flight. When I don’t get upgraded I usually smack the airline agent buy the business class fare earning twice as much miles to finance my upcoming trips. Flying business is not a luxury when you get a red eye from Miami to London, land at 7 and need to be operational for a meeting at 8:30.
  • What clichés don’t you want to hear anymore?

    Nigerian Scam Boosted by Recession

    Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Last Friday mailman was looking for a signature. He had important certified mail to deliver.

    scamenvelope

Surprisingly it was a request for cash. One of our employees had a terrible accident in Lagos, Nigeria. Yeah…one of our employees we never had…was traveling to Nigeria…got hurt during a safari [lol], contacted a fellow American for help and now we should send an urgent Western Union to pay for a return ticket. Can’t stop laughing…

Ok, now – who can fall for this? Who would actually send $750 via Western Union to Nigeria for an unknown/inexisting employee?! One other thing I still don’t get – certified mail costs more than an email. Why would they ‘invest’ in a hopeless scam?

Beats me. I posted the actual scans because they are a real piece of [scam] art.

    To Whom It May Concern

    Monday, September 28th, 2009

Jealousy is simply and clearly the fear that you do not have value.  Jealousy scans for evidence to prove the point – that others will be preferred and rewarded more than you.  There is only one alternative – self-value.  If you cannot love yourself, you will not believe that you are loved.  You will always think it’s a mistake or luck.  Take your eyes off others and turn the scanner within.  Find the seeds of your jealousy, clear the old voices and experiences.  Put all the energy into building your personal and emotional security.  Then you will be the one others envy, and you can remember the pain and reach out to them.

Georges Bush ducks to avoid flying shoe

    Monday, December 15th, 2008

Amazing reflex from Bush on this one. He is very calm and even stops a security agent running toward him.

I think secret service agents will need to be much faster to protect Obama.

    Android on HTC Touch

    Friday, December 12th, 2008

If you happen to have an old Windows Mobile HTC you can install Android on it. It works like a charm as you can see on this video.
This install is a dual-boot WM and Android made possible by XDA-Developers.
I was very active on XDA forums 5 years ago but I lost interest in Windows Mobile machines after my first BlackBerry. But if we can have Android on those devices…I might give it a try.
